Davies joins Scorpions on loan
Widnes Vikings’ utility forward Ben Davies has today joined Kingstone Press Championship 1 side South Wales Scorpions, on an initial one-month loan deal.
Davies has made just one substitute appearance, in the away defeat at Catalan Dragons, for the Vikings in Super League 2013, and his Head Coach Denis Betts says the 23 year-old will benefit massively from the extended game time on offer at the Scorpions, commenting; “Ben has found opportunities at the Vikings difficult to come by this season and this opening came about through the friendship of Mick Cassidy and Scorpions’ Head Coach Dave Clarke.
“Being too old to feature in the U19s competition, Ben found himself at a bit of a crossroads and with nowhere to play. He’s now in a position to get some games under his belt, and receive some quality coaching while he’s there.”
A product of Leigh East ARLFC, Ben progressed through the junior ranks at Wigan, winning representative honours for Lancashire, as well as representing England at U15s and U18s level.
He made his debut for the Vikings as a dual registered player from Wigan, in a Northern Rail Cup tie at Batley in February 2010. The following season, Ben gained further invaluable first team experience with loan spells at both Barrow and Castleford before committing his future to the Vikings ahead of their return to the top flight in 2012.
Contracted at Widnes until the end of the 2013 Super League season, to date, he has featured on 42 occasions for the Vikings and scored 6 tries for the club.
If selected, Ben will make his debut for South Wales Scorpions on Sunday (28th April), in their Kingstone Press Championship 1 game versus Rochdale Hornets at The Gnoll, Neath.
