St Judes victorious in National Championship
Wigan St Judes held off a stirring comeback by Thatto Heath Crusaders to take the inaugural RFL Under-14s National Championship by 20-12.
Leading 16-0 at half-time St Judes were pegged back following two Connor Follin tries, but with the game very much in the balance Robbie King sealed the win with a superb 20 metre scoot as he beat five players and scored to the left of the posts.
Despite the downpour the superb state of the Chorley Panthers’s Chisnall Playing Fields facility ensured a tournament full of skill, tries and closely fought battles throughout.
The pilot event was contested this year between junior teams from the North West, Barrow and Cumbria with all sides playing two 40 minute games to decide a ranking order.
The Third Place Play-off was a passionate affair as Kells overturned a 16-6 half-time deficit to emerge victorious and snatch the bragging rights by 16-22 much to the delight of the travelling fans.
