South African refs fly in for the festival
Three match officials from South Africa have flown into the UK for the Festivals of World Cups.
The three officials Hendrik Von Wielligh, Warren Pretorius and AJ Barnard all travelled to improve their personal skills and abilities alongside observing a variety of events to take back and help develop the game back home.
In a packed first week the guys helped to run and officiate at the North West Emerging Schools tournament in Wigan, closely followed by a trip to Colchester for the Australia v New Zealand Armed Forces group game, before taking to the field in the Student World Cup Super Sunday event at the South Leeds Stadium.
They also watched the Wakefield v Widnes Super League match, to experience and watch the top level players and officials live.
Hendrik Von Wielligh commented, “Being involved at this level and being part of this Festivals of World Cups really takes us to a next level of experience.”
“It will certainly raise the spirit and commitment of everyone back home as they will see this as a milestone to work towards in the future and also getting involved in more high profile games internationally.
“Experience like this can never be taken away and we will definitely take this back and grow towards a much better future after this experience.”
Their tour concludes with visits to the Festival of World Cups Finals day at Headingley Stadium and looking closely at the UK structures to take the game and officiating in South Africa to the next level.
