Late try earns Crusaders victory
Dave McConnell crossed six minutes from time as North Wales Crusaders beat Gateshead 24-20 to remain in touching distance of Kingstone Press Championship 1 leaders Oldham.
The visitors recovered from going behind to Omari Caro's eighth-minute try to take a 12-8 advantage into the break, thanks to two tries from Tommy Johnson and Jamie Durbin.
The lead continued to change hands in the second period - first Paul Stamp crossing for the Thunder, with Leon Brennan then passing the whitewash at the other end.
Gateshead, struggling towards the foot of the table, thought they had picked up a shock win when Ricky Hough got their third try in the 64th minute, Benn Hardcastle maintaining his 100 per cent record from conversions.
However, McConnell's score moved the pendulum back in the Crusaders' favour, Johnson adding the extras for a fourth time to give him a personal total of 12 points.
Crusaders are remain five points adrift of Oldham, yet they have two games in hand.
