Young Refs line up for Wembley
Seven of the country’s top junior referees are busy preparing to officiate in the biggest games of their careers so far when they step out at the Champion Schools National Finals including an appearance at Wembley.
This unique experience sees the referees officiate seven finals at Richmond Athletic Association on Friday 23rd August prior to running out at Wembley on the Year 7 Boys curtain raiser to the Tetley’s Challenge Cup final between Hull FC and Wigan Warriors.
This year’s squad are (Referees society in brackets) Liam Moore (Wigan), Craig Smith (St Helens), Tara Jones (Warrington), Callum Straw (Wakefield), Jack Pullein (Huddersfield), Curtly Etchells (Barrow) and Gaige Corvo (Leeds). All have worked extremely hard throughout their local community game season, the national stages of the Champion Schools and fully deserve their selection.
All the referees will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of previous referees who’ve been involved in the Wembley curtain raiser which include current Super League ref Tim Roby and Championship ref Warren Turley.
Peter Brooke, Education Officer commented, “This is an exciting opportunity for any young match official and congratulations go to all who have been selected.”
“Each year selecting seven officials from 150 juniors who work hard each week gets more difficult.
“I’m sure those appearing at Wembley this year will thoroughly enjoy the experience which will last with them for a life time.”
