Widnes seal Galea deal

Widnes Vikings have signed experienced Australian back-row forward Danny Galea from Canterbury Bulldogs.

Widnes Vikings have signed experienced Australian back-row forward Danny Galea from Canterbury Bulldogs.

The 29-year-old, who has also played for Penrith, Wests Tigers and Canberra, is the Vikings' first recruit for 2014.

Widnes coach Denis Betts said: "Danny is a really strong back rower and a great defensive player. We've had lots of good raps on him coming out of Australia.

"A lot of people may not know who he is immediately but he has a fantastic pedigree and is a former Australian schoolboys representative.

"He's played a large number of NRL games at first-grade level and I'm confident that he will surprise a few people when he comes over to these shores.

"Danny will bring plenty of leadership qualities, hunger, enthusiasm and a wealth of knowledge with him and the younger players in our group will only benefit from having him as team-mate."

Galea said his friendship with Widnes full-back Rhys Hanbury paved the way for his move to Super League.

"I'm good mates with Rhys Hanbury from our time spent alongside each other at the Tigers and I've spoken with him on a number of occasions about my desire to come overseas and give it a go," Galea said.

"I try to catch as many Super League games as I can and I like to keep in touch with how some of the boys that I've played footy with over the years are going on.

"The standard of the competition looks really impressive and, apart from getting stuck into each other on the field, I'm also looking forward to re-contacting these blokes and renewing our friendships off the field."

Hanbury said: "I've no doubt whatsoever that Danny will be a good signing for us.

"He is a really honest player and his work ethic in defence and the ability to put on a 'big shot' is something that will please not only the players around him on the field, but also our fans."
