Hornets storm to promotion

Rochdale lifted their first trophy since 1922 and with it gained promotion to the Kingstone Press Championship thanks to a 32-18 win over neighbours Oldham in the Championship One play-off final at Leigh.

Hornets, who finished nine points behind Oldham in the table, trailed 18-12 early in the second half but clinched victory with second rower Dave Llewellyn's second try nine minutes from the end.

Rochdale twice took the lead in the first half courtesy of tries from Llewellyn and Danny Davies, both converted by stand-off Paul Crook, but Oldham twice hit back to draw level thanks to tries from Jon Ford and Kenny Hughes.

Centre David Cookson put the Roughyeds in front for the first time four minutes into the second half with his side's third try, to which Lewis Palfrey added his third goal, but Rochdale finished the stronger side.

Centre Dave Hull, Llewellyn and full-back Wayne English all scored tries in the last 23 minutes and man of the match Crook took his goal tally to six from six attempts.

The outcome means Rochdale go up with champions North Wales Crusaders while Oldham must battle on in the third tier of professional rugby league after suffering a fifth final defeat in the last seven years.
