Craven pens new Vikings deal

Tetley's Challenge Cup semi-finalists Widnes Vikings have handed half-back Danny Craven a new three-year contract.

Tetley's Challenge Cup semi-finalists Widnes Vikings have handed half-back Danny Craven a new three-year contract.

The 22-year-old was a try-scorer in the Vikings' 56-6 quarter-final win over Keighley on Thursday night, taking his points total for the club to 165 in 47 appearances.

"It's good to get the contract sorted and out the way and I can play without any pressure and hopefully put a few good performances in," said the St Helens-born player, whose new deal takes him to the end of the 2017 season.

"I know everyone at the club and it's one that's going places. We are now 80 minutes away from a Challenge Cup final and a first Wembley appearance in 18 years, plus we are in the top eight in Super League and it's a great time to be involved in the club."

Craven is the 11th player to sign a new contract with the Vikings, whose coach Denis Betts said: "There's been a number of players out of contract at the end of the year and the retention of quality players within our squad has been a paramount objective for the club.

"Danny is central to that and we are pleased that he's committed his future to us and (decided to) keep his development with this group.

"He's an exciting, talented young kid and there's so much more to come from Danny. The potential within his reach is frightening and we hope he will come out the other side and have a great career with Widnes Vikings."
